It’s very weird how time passes – it seems like 2018 had only just begun, and now we are just a couple of weeks from 2019. How did that happen?
Many of us set goals 11.5 months ago – how are we doing with them? Are we caught in a revolving door of making the same resolutions over and over? Let’s make 2019 the year that we break that cycle. In order to do that, we have to understand what has been happening.
Starting something new is always fun. It’s really not hard to get motivated to do something new and exciting, to learn new things, to get that dopamine rush from being with new people, doing new things. We’ve started a new wellness program or a new business, and we are going to crush it this time!
The problem comes once the shiny newness has worn off – when we get into the grind of actually working on our results. Rome was not built in a day, and neither are fit bodies or successful businesses.
Maybe it’s not convenient – we’ve got to get kids to sports, and blow off our own workout. The couch calls us, and suddenly we’ve gone down the rabbit hole of Netflix or Facebook. Time passes and the things we said were important somehow don’t get done. What’s going on here?
My friend and mentor Susan Sly says that your schedule will tell you the truth about your priorities. How much time are you actually spending on the things you said you wanted to accomplish this year?
If you don’t like the answers to these questions, you are not alone. We’ve all been there, I promise you. The difference between people who get things done and people who just wish they did, is in the choice to take action, despite the fear. To quote Susan Jeffers, feel the fear and do it anyway.
The most important tool in the fight against fear is understanding – if we can figure out why we are afraid, we can look at that fear and see whether it really is as scary as we think it is.
I don’t say this lightly. Sometimes we are dealing with some very real and deep-seated fears. Many women are afraid to show up and be seen, because of traumatic events in their past. But the only way to step out of that victim state and into their power, is to face their fear and do the work anyway.
The key to sticking with work that is no longer so exciting, day in and day out, is to have a set of excellent habits, as well as a powerful why – which brings me back to Brendon Burchard and his book, called High Performance Habits.
I recently created a series of Facebook Live videos, now also available on my YouTube channel Energy Queens, in which I talk about the first of the High Performance Habits, namely Seeking Clarity. When you have clarity in what you seek, it is much easier to stick with the actions you need to take in order to seek it. You can find my YouTube channel here in the sidebar.
If you are ready to reach your goals in 2019, whether they are health or business goals, or any other area of life in which you want to achieve excellence, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s do this together!
