I started drinking Bulletproof coffee about 5 years ago, and it has changed my life. I was introduced to it by my holistic nutritionist, and it has been a major component in a regimen that helps keep my autoimmune digestive issues under control.
The two major components of bulletproof coffee are concentrated caprylic acid (usually from coconut oil – I use the Bulletproof brand), and butyrate (from clarified butter, or ghee – I make it at home from grassfed butter). I also add protein powder and flavour additives such as peppermint leaves, cardamom pods or stevia-based flavourings. Of course, don’t forget the coffee – I use a high-quality coffee that has been tested for aflatoxins. I put all of it in a French press and pump like crazy, resulting in a delicious emulsion that is like a latté, and not greasy at all. If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you will have seen it in my stories.
So what do these things do, and why are they so important for digestive health?
Caprylic acid is a medium-chain fatty acid believed to have potent antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Research has shown that it can help control yeast overgrowth and bacterial infections, especially in the digestive tract.
Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid, plentiful in butter, and also created in the gut by eating prebiotics and other plant fibres. Like caprylic acid, butyrate is an anti-inflammatory, but it also provides fuel for the cells in the gut lining, and may help control blood sugar as well.
Of course, adding serious amounts of fat to your morning coffee is not without caloric consequences, but it can be accommodated with some thought and planning. It helps you feel full in the morning and can be part of an intermittent fasting lifestyle as well. It’s a good idea to start cautiously – I began with a quarter teaspoon of Bulletproof oil, and now for several years I have used a full tablespoon. Don’t use too much oil at once or you will regret it, if you take my drift.
