Permeable Consciousness

As you may know, I am currently in Israel visiting my family, following my father’s passing. I’ve been enjoying good food, good conversations and healing walks on the beach. It’s truly a gift.

One of the conversations I had recently was with a very talented musician. We were reminiscing about my father and his influence on us, and how grateful we are to have known him and been the recipients of his love and grace. While we miss his physical presence, we were both surprised at how certain we are that he is not gone from us. We talked about other situations we have experienced with unexplainable knowing or connection, and it made me think about the concept of permeable consciousness.

Some people are very intuitive and creative – think of someone like Mozart, who seemed to be channeling music from another realm. Others are very empathetic, sensing the emotions of others. Many people have experiences they can’t explain rationally, and then they have to decide whether they will discount them as a meaningless coincidence, or accept them as a gift from something larger than themselves. That is up to each person to determine, and we may feel differently about these things at different times of our lives.

I like to think of these experiences as being the result of a certain permeability in our consciousness – the ability to access our collective unconscious, as it were. Like the membranes in our physical body, most of the time our conscious mind has a barrier to keep out things it doesn’t understand. But sometimes, even for the most rational and closed-minded of us, it leaks.

I’d love to know what you think of this. Am I totally up the woo woo creek, or does it resonate with you? I’d love to know!
