One of my kids’ favourite music videos is called “Brave”, by Sara Bareilles. It’s about having the courage to speak out.
It is just too easy sometimes to not say anything, to slink away, to avoid responsibility. We avert our gaze and pretend not to see the injustice, the bullying, whatever it is that we don’t want to get involved in.
In the book Life, the Universe and Everything, part of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, the heroes land a spaceship in the middle of Lord’s cricket grounds, during a match. Nobody sees it, because it is cloaked in an SEP field – Somebody Else’s Problem. It has therefore become completely invisible.
Courage isn’t the absence of fear – it’s feeling the fear and speaking out anyway. I want to see how big your brave is.
