How to #DoItAnyway

What do you do when you don’t feel like doing what you know you should?

#DoItAnyway.

A few months ago, I heard my friend and mentor Susan Sly interview Jesse Itzler, the guy who invited a Navy SEAL to live in his house and teach him how to make better choices.

They talked about all sorts of things, but one question that Jesse asked Susan really stuck with me.

He said, “If it isn’t moving the needle, why are you doing it?”

The older I get, the more I ask myself that question, and the more I’m making choices to stop doing things that don’t serve my purpose and vision, and focus on doing those things that do.

It means a lot less time on Twitter, and more time being purposeful on Facebook and Instagram.

It means less time worrying about what other people might think, and more time asking them questions that matter.

It means less time worrying about how I look, and more time paying attention to how I feel.

It also means doing the things that I know I should do, even when I don’t feel like doing them – whether it’s in the business, the gym, with my family or with my community.

Because the vision that I have for what I want to achieve in this life, and the limited time that I have to achieve that vision, are more important than how I might feel at that actual moment.

I take inspiration from Ray Higdon, who has created a video every single day for over 10 years. He didn’t always feel like making those videos, but he made them anyway, because his vision was stronger than any inclination to whine or procrastinate.

That’s whom I want to be – someone who acts rather than complains. Someone who changes their own reality, and that of others, by consistent action.

That is how we #DoItAnyway – by taking action every time we are inclined to give something else priority over that vision.

I’m not talking about taking care of your kids or supporting your family – I’m talking about things that really aren’t important – wasted time that we can never get back, scrolling aimlessly through social media, eating food that doesn’t serve us, gossiping, filling our hearts and minds with negativity and hatred instead of joy and growth.

If it doesn’t move the needle, don’t do it. Do what matters, instead. Every day.
