Setting Goals

I think you will agree that the last few years have been stressful. I don’t know about you, but I am one of those people who tends to medicate all stress, fatigue or sorrow with sugar- and there have been plenty of all three lately.

I suppose there are worse drugs I could be using, but given that my mother died from complications of diabetes when she was only seven years older than I am now, it’s time to get this under control.

I am not one to set weight goals in general, but they can be a useful proxy for how well I am taking care of myself. Right now, the number on the scale is telling me that I have been turning to sugar rather than sleep too often. I am uncomfortable in my clothes, and unhappy with how often I feel fatigued. Some of that can be attributed to post-viral syndrome (I am still coughing from the aftermath of being careless in a dance class back in August 2023), but I don’t doubt that going to bed when I’m tired instead of getting into the carbs would help me feel better on all fronts.

Accountability is hugely important in achieving goals – so I hope you will help me be accountable, and maybe even jump on this self-care train with me. I will be using MyFitnessPal, and my username there is Emet_H. Feel free to send me a friend request (and a message to let me know who you are), and we can support each other. Changing bad habits is hard, but to quote the great philosopher Piglet, it’s so much more friendly with two (or more!).

Even if you don’t use MFP, I’d love to chat with you about this – whether it’s sleep, exercise, stress relief or nutrition, we can all use support. I know I can. Let’s talk!
