Celebration in Times of Anxiety

I don’t know about you, but I feel like I have emotional whiplash right now.

As the world grapples with the reality of the novel corona virus, social distancing has become the expression of the day, governments are closing schools, libraries and borders, and for some reason, people are hoarding toilet paper.

As we hear the grim news of deaths in Italy and the disruption of everyday life all over the world, it is easy to fall into fear and anxiety. We like to think that we have control of our lives, and it comes as a rude shock to discover that we actually don’t.

And yet, it’s important to celebrate.

Let us celebrate that healthy people are doing this to themselves, in order to protect the vulnerable.

Let us celebrate that researchers all over the world are racing to find solutions to this problem.

Let us celebrate that physical distancing is not destroying the fabric of our communities, as we reach out to each other in other ways.

Let us celebrate that people are paying attention to their health and working to boost their immune systems.

Let us celebrate that governments, businesses and individuals are doing what they can to soften the economic blows caused by all these closures.

Let us celebrate that the indomitable human spirit is manifesting itself in this scary time.

What are you ready to celebrate? Let me know!
